Ector County Motorcycle Wreck Kills 1 - Odessa Personal Injury Attorneys

An article on News West - 9 stated that a man was killed while riding his motorcycle in Ector County last Saturday, June 24th. The crash occurred on the Farm to Market Road 2020 about two and a half miles west of Odessa. The man, Micheal D. Manning, a 48-year-old Odessa resident, was driving westbound on the left inside lane. The man who struck him was driving a 2015 Ram 3500 truck. 21-year-old Sauceda was driving in the outside lane. He then tried to pass another vehicle but struck Manning in the rear of his bike. Sadly, Manning wasn't wearing a helmet and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Danger of Motorcycles

Sadly, it seems that people have a problem seeing motorcycle riders. Some scientists believe that this happens because of the way our brain and eyes communicate with each other. Because most people are expecting to see a car or a vehicle that is larger than a motorcycle on the road, it's almost like the brain doesn't register that the motorcycle is there. It's almost like an optical illusion. You can read more about this theory in this article by Road and Track

Safety First

First off, the man was regretfully not wearing a helmet during the crash. While the State of Texas doesn't require riders to wear a helmet, this is widely accepted as a smart safety practice. Some riders are often tempted to put their machines to the test. This practice of speeding and weaving through traffic is another way where the rider puts his or her own life at risk. Careful and defensive driving and wearing all the proper safety equipment may help you stay safer. However, since there are a ton of other people on the road, the human error element is always present while driving. Try as you might, there is no accounting for other people's driving habits.
