The oilfields are a tough place to work. Most people will agree that working in the fields of the gas and oil extraction/refining industries are among one of the most deadly and dangerous jobs. This stems from the fact that most of the time, the workers are expected to work in adverse weather conditions around lots of exposed moving parts for long hours at a time. Combine the fatigue that can come with working 12 hours straight a day for a week straight with working in the summer heat or the spring rains and you may very well have a recipe for disaster.
Why so Dangerous?
I can only guess why the fatality rate seems to stay so high in a work environment where there are so many apparent dangers. Numerous studies have shown that the numbers of deaths are going down, but there are still some pretty startling numbers. In the long run, it may be because the desire for profit and productivity by the upper echelon of the oil industry doesn't care for the lives of the workers providing them with the oil and gas. This is just my opinion, however, and should be taken with a grain of salt. I just can't seem to understand why, in this safety minded day in age, that the dangers of the oil industry still seem to take so many lives.
